Compare the Forms Before the Features
PaperSurvey only recognizes forms generated within PaperSurvey. It cannot automatically process completed questionnaires printed from Word, Remark, or another platform. Importing question text helps you build a new survey before printing; it does not convert an existing stack of responses. Read our form compatibility explanation before choosing a tool.
Software with configurable recognition templates may be worth testing if your forms are already printed. Even then, compatibility depends on the layout and scan quality. Give the vendor a blank form and representative completed scans before committing. PaperSurvey: New Surveys With Paper, Web and Written Comments
PaperSurvey combines survey design, printing, scan uploads, response verification and reporting in a browser. It suits projects where colleagues collect paper responses in different locations and need to review the same dataset. The paper-and-web workflow lets respondents use either collection method for a survey.
For a concrete look at the output, download the fictional training-feedback dataset in Excel, CSV, or SPSS format, with its questionnaire preview, codebook, and illustrative review log. The files demonstrate export structure; they are not a recognition benchmark.
The trade-off is form compatibility: your next round must use PaperSurvey-generated pages. Plan for questionnaire setup, a small pilot and time to check recognition results. Page and handwriting-field allowances, included users and integrations depend on your subscription; they are not unlimited. API access requires Enterprise Plus on the regular plans.
Remark Office OMR: Custom Forms and Windows Workflows
Office OMR accepts files from scanners and copiers as well as direct TWAIN scanning. Its strengths include custom form layouts, built-in analysis and extensive data exports. An experienced team with working templates and a local-processing requirement may have little reason to switch. Optional cloud handwriting recognition needs a separate Microsoft account, so include that service when assessing data handling and setup.

Remark Test Grading: A Separate Cloud Product for Exams
Remark Test Grading is not the desktop Office OMR product. It supports paper and online tests, rosters, answer keys, grading reports and named LMS connectors. Its documented open-response workflow lets a grader review answer images; that should not be confused with automatic transcription of handwritten survey comments. FormScanner: Free Multiple-Choice Capture With Your Own Setup
The FormScanner project describes a free, open-source application that builds recognition templates from blank scans and exports CSV. That can be sufficient when the task is reading marked answers and the team can manage configuration and analysis itself. Our FormScanner comparison looks at where it fits.
Check installation on your actual computer before choosing it. Test the intended form layout and review the project's documentation for any additional requirement, such as handwriting, team access or support. A free license does not eliminate the staff time needed to set up and maintain the workflow.
Compare the Cost of a Collection Round
Use the same workload when comparing prices. For example, 500 respondents completing three pages each means 1,500 scanned pages. If each respondent has four handwritten fields, allow for 2,000 handwritten fields as well. Check how the provider counts reprocessing, and whether usage falls in one month or several.
For a subscription, include those usage allowances, the people who need access and the features on the required plan. For installed software, include the relevant license, any maintenance or recognition service, and the work required to prepare and share results. Existing institutional licenses can change the calculation considerably. A lower starting price alone does not establish lower project cost.
Run a Small Pilot Before Printing the Full Batch
Compare the complete job using the same questionnaire and a known set of answers. If a product requires its own generated layout, create that version first and complete new sample forms.
- Build the form. Record setup time and check that question wording, scales and identifiers match your requirements.
- Use realistic inputs. Include handwritten comments, blank answers, multiple selections and scans from the equipment you will actually use.
- Review recognition. Compare against the known answers, including some responses the software did not flag, since a product's flags will not catch every misread. Record errors and correction time separately.
- Inspect the export. Check row counts, question codes, missing values and handwritten text in the final spreadsheet or statistical file.
- Hand the work to a colleague. Test whether another team member can review the next batch and reproduce the result.
This provides evidence about your workload. It is more useful than assuming that an advertised accuracy figure applies to every layout, language and scanner.
